Satellite Health & Status at the Joint National
Test Facility
Three System 500 Model 550s
are being used at the Joint National Test Facility
at Falcon Air Force Base to support satellite
commanding activities for both the Ballistic
Missile Defense Organizations (BMDO) and
the Space and Missile Systems Center Test &
Evaluation Directorates (SMC/TE) growing
number of satellite missions.
For program operations, test
engineers use the 550 to control and monitor
satellite health & status, and/or collect,
process, and distribute satellite payload data.
The 550 can accept multiple telemetry downlinks
from multiple satellites, process that data
using a single real-time front-end processor,
and visually monitor real-time events on multiple
UNIX-based workstations. By automating
system functions through flexible alarm processing
and intelligent software using Expert System
technology, the user-friendly Model 550 quickly
and clearly identifies system anomalies as they
arise.
The Model 550 saves the BMDO
and the SMC/TE time and money because it packs
the functionality of what once required numerous
systems into a single chassis. The system
is so advanced, yet so easy to use that less
sophisticated operators can man the controls,
freeing test engineers for other mission-critical
tasks. And because the technology is available
right off the shelf, engineers at the Joint
National Test Facility are free to integrate
the system with any third-party equipment they
choose.
