50 Mbps CCSDS Processing for NASA Johnson

Numerous System 500 Model 550 Front End Processors are providing ongoing support of Shuttle communications at NASA Johnson Space Center’s Consolidated Communications Facility (CCF).  The CCF was specifically designed to replace older NASA systems with one easy-to-use integrated communications system.

To support the CCF, the Model 550 processors monitor Shuttle information and route data, video, and voice from space to ground processing centers for further analysis.  Equipped with special I/O modules and CCSDS packet processing modules and algorithms, the processors receive data streams in various formats, check their quality, provide the capability for further processing, and reformat the data streams for transmission to other destinations.  The new processors also provide an increased CCSDS bandwidth of 50 Mbps, allowing engineers to receive and process the wider bandwidth data to be produced by the International Space Station.

The Model 550s purchased for the Consolidated Communications Facility join 33 other System 500s already at NASA Johnson supporting such facilities as the Avionics Electronics Lab, Mission Evaluation Room, and Orbital Data Reduction Center where they handle everything from decommutating frame syncs to performing critical mission evaluation for Shuttle flights.  Together, these key installations position L-3 Communications Telemetry-Wast as the leading supplier of integrated CCSDS, NASCOM, and telemetry processors for NASA.
